A weekend in Gladstone, on foot

Park once and leave the car for most of it. From 167 Goondoon Street you can walk to dinner, the shops, the gallery and a show — and it’s a five-minute drive to the foreshore and the beach.

The best thing about staying in the heart of Gladstone is that you can leave the car parked for most of your stay. From the motel’s front door on Goondoon Street, the shops, the gallery, the entertainment centre and a strip of cafés and pubs are all an easy walk — and East Shores, the marina and the beach are each a five-minute drive. Here’s a weekend mapped out.

Friday night — dinner on Goondoon Street

At the door· on foot

Drop the bags and walk to dinner. There’s a Thai restaurant in the building next door, and Goondoon Street — Gladstone’s main street — runs right past the door with cafés, pubs and restaurants along it. No taxi, no parking, just a stroll back to a quiet room afterwards.

Saturday morning — East Shores foreshore

~5 min· drive

A five-minute drive down to the harbour (or a pleasant longer walk) brings you to East Shores, Gladstone’s free harbourside parklands. There’s an interactive water-play park, shaded lawns, barbecues and a lit promenade along the water — the town’s favourite spot for a morning out or letting the kids loose. There’s plenty of free parking when you arrive.

Saturday afternoon — Art Gallery & Museum

~5 min· walk

Back up the hill, the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum is an easy stroll along Goondoon Street. It runs rotating exhibitions of fine art, photography and local history, and entry is free for most shows — a cool, quiet hour out of the Queensland sun.

Saturday night — a show at the Entertainment Centre

~10 min· walk

The Gladstone Entertainment Centre at 56 Goondoon Street is about a ten-minute walk away, hosting touring productions, live music, comedy and community events. Book a show, walk there, walk home — no Uber required.

Sunday — the marina, then a swim

Short drive· or long walk

Finish with a wander down to Gladstone Marina and the Maritime Museum — a short drive, or a longer harbourside walk if the weather’s kind — then come back and cool off in the motel’s saltwater pool before you check out. A whole weekend, and the car never moved.
